From Tech Transfer Newsletter » printer-friendly We Introduce the Pavement Technology UpdatePerhaps you've noticed the article about tack coat inserted into this issue of Tech Transfer. The article, "Recent Findings on the Use of Tack Coat Between Pavement Layers," is the first in a new series called the Pavement Technology Update. Each issue will describe practical applications of a different innovation in pavement technology. The Technology Transfer Program is producing the Pavement Technology Update in cooperation with the University of California Pavement Research Center (UCPRC). The UCPRC conducts research on pavements of all types and on California highways. With facilities at UC Berkeley and UC Davis, the UCPRC is primarily funded by the California Department of Transportation. Most of the UCPRC's work is done through the Partnered Pavement Research Center contract, whose mission is to apply innovative research and sound engineering principles to improve pavement structures, materials, and technologies through partnership between academia, Caltrans, and industry. The first issue in the series, "Recent Findings on the Use of Tack Coat Between Pavement Layers," explains how bonded and unbonded pavement layers performed in a test using a Heavy Vehicle Simulator, describes research findings and the results of a comprehensive survey on the use of tack coat worldwide, introduces a contrary view on the use of tack coat, provides an overview of Caltrans' use of tack coat, and provides practical recommendations for way to realize successful tack coat applications.
